  • Presentation
In June 1987, a meeting "revolution" took place in Dakar between the leaders of the ANC, the South African liberation movement in exile, and an influential group of liberal and progressive South Africans, most of them Afrikaners leaders from the business world, culture, civil society, politics, religion and academia. The meeting, called for "Dakar meeting" has initiated a process which led to the fall of the apartheid regime and the rise to power of a democratically elected government.
The Institue Gorée was born from an idea put forward by President Abdou Diouf who then chaired the meeting which Danielle Mitterrand of France-Libertés Foundation also participated.
The Gorée Institute, Center for Democracy, Development and Culture in Africa was founded in June 1992 by a number of concerned and committed Africans to promote peace and development on the continent.
They were all leaders in their respective areas of expertise: politics, institution building, human rights, culture, etc.
The Gorée Institue is an independent, a pan-African organization of civil society with a legal status based on a Headquarters Agreement with the Republic of Senegal in November 1991.
Since its inception, the Gorée Institue continued its vision by contributing to the emergence of an independent, politically stronger, a socially engaged civil society with an effective and responsible citizenship for sustainable development of our communities.
Since 2003, following an analysis of the African context, the Institute decided to follow a new direction that focuses on researching and understanding the causes of conflicts in Africa, the promotion of political dialogue and the conditions for lasting peace , deepening democratization through involvement in the electoral process.
