    The Authority for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety ( ARSN ) is a public institution with a special status , with legal personality and financial autonomy. It is placed under the authority of the Prime Minister .
    It is governed by the provisions of safety-related Laws nuclear and radiation protection.

    Missions
     The A.R.S.N. performs on behalf of the state, control of nuclear safety and radiation protection in Senegal to protect workers, patients, the public and the environment from the risks related to nuclear activities. It also contributes to information and citizen awareness.
    It assists, advises and provides information on all questions of safety in particular in the following areas:
    1. Protection of the environment;
    2. Public health and health;
    3. Planning and preparation for emergency situations;
    4. Radioactive waste management (including the definition of a national policy);
     5. Civil liability (including implementation of national regulations and international conventions on civil liability);
    6. Physical protection and safeguards;
    7. Use of water and food;
     8. Land use;
    9. Safe transport of dangerous goods. 
    The A.R.S.N. provides a public service mission; as such, it can give orders and issue regulations and guides. As part of its roles and prerogatives, it may require any operator to conduct a safety assessment as well it may require from public or private bodies all documents and notice that it needs. Chapter II . - Missions of A.R.S.N. The A.R.S.N. is responsible for policy implementation defined by the President of the Republic in the areas of radiation protection and nuclear safety; its missions revolve around three main axes are : regulation , monitoring and public information .
    Pursuant to the said Article 4, the A.R.S.N. shall: - develop and propose to the head of state national policy in the field of radiation protection, nuclear and radiation safety, the safety of sources of ionizing radiation and the management of radioactive waste; - Develop and propose to the Head of State regulations regarding the principles and criteria for the safety and security of sources of ionizing radiation and the safety of radioactive waste and transport of radioactive materials; - Issuing individual permits, licenses, notifications, to grant exemptions, to modify, suspend or cancel authorizations in the field of the atom of applications within the scope of medical, industrial and research and transport of radioactive substances; - Ensure that users of ionizing radiation, nuclear operators or shippers of radioactive materials fully exercise their responsibilities and obligations for radiation protection and nuclear safety; - Inspect sites or facilities that may contain ionizing radiation sources in order to assess the conditions of radiation safety and compliance with the
    regulations and other specific requirements contained in the authorization; - To establish to establish and levy fees for permits and other approvals. to establish and maintain a national register of ionizing radiation sources and collect information in the field of radiation protection and nuclear and radiation safety; - To participate in public information, particularly in case of radiological or nuclear emergency; - To assist the government in addressing in particular the competent authorities its recommendations on actions to take on the medical, health or under civil and environmental security; - To take enforcement action (up permanently, recording, performing office work, working suspension, etc ...) and the necessary sanctions and emergency measures with government approval; - To exchange information and cooperate with regulatory authorities of other countries and international organizations in the field of radiation safety, nuclear safety and security of radiation sources and especially with the International Agency Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Under safety and radiation protection, ARSN is responsible for monitoring: - industrial nuclear facilities, mining, hospital and research from design to decommissioning; - Pressure Equipment specially designed for these installations; - Management of radioactive waste; - The transport of radioactive substances.
    The A.R.S.N. prepare an annual activity report it transmits to the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister and Parliament.
